Gluten free apple crisp cooked in a skillet.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp is the best way to celebrate the start of fall.  It is ooey, gooey and full of tart and sweet flavors. Easy to make and perfect for those with dietary restrictions.  {gluten free}

Fall is here and I'm dreaming of crisp apples, beef stews, pumpkins, and hayrides.

This Gluten Free Apple Crisp recipe is a lower-sugar, healthy alternative to traditional apple crisp recipes. This apple crisp is made with gluten free flour, gluten free oats, almond butter, and coconut sugar, while the traditional apple crisp is made with white flour, white sugar, butter, and cornstarch. This gluten-free apple crisp is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without guilt. It's also a great option for those with food allergies or dietary restrictions.

How To Make Healthy Apple Crisp

Ingredients

  •   5-6 apples, cored and sliced.  I prefer Honeycrisp
  •   1 cup gluten free quick cooking oatmeal
  •   ½ cup coconut sugar
  •   ½ cup almond flour
  •   ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  •   ½ stick cold butter, cut into cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 °. Grease or spray an 8 x 8 baking dish or cast iron skillet.
  • Put sliced apples into the pan.
  • In a bowl stir the oats, sugar, almond flour, and cinnamon.
  • Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture with your hands until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Top apples with flour mixture.
  • Bake for 35-45 min. until the topping gets golden.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

What are the best apples for apple crisp?

When it comes to apples for apple crisp, there are a few different types you can use. Honeycrisp apples are always my first choice because they are tart and firm. Other good options include Golden Delicious, Rome, Jonathan Apples, Braeburn, and Northern Spy.

If you prefer peaches, try this Peach Crumble with Oats.

If you have lots of apples in your house this fall here are some other ways to use this seasonal treat...

  • on a turkey sandwich
  • in oatmeal
  • sauteed with pork chops or chicken
  • in or on top of pancakes
  • add to salads and coleslaw
  • in a salsa
  • with caramel dip
  • in kale smoothies
  • in infused vodka
  • to soften brown sugar

This looks delicious, I think I almost prefer oat toppings to more of a flour crumble with apples. Perfect for all those in season apples!
